Corporation Overview
Black Mothers' Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) is a non-profit organization, exempt from taxes under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

BMBFA recognizes its responsibility to the healthcare professionals and the families (mothers, fathers, infants, grandparents) in which we service. We are committed to educating the community about the benefits of breastfeeding, providing valuable resources and offering on-going support.

Vision Statement

To improve the health of the African American community by increasing the number of mothers who breastfeed and the length of time spent doing so.

Mission Statement

BMBFA is a non-profit organization increasing awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding throughout the African American community. We will improve the quality of life and enhance self reliance by educating, providing valuable resources, offering on-going support, and joining forces with other organizations that share our interest.

Education:

To conduct a weekly four series workshop in Detroit, MI detailing the following topics…

  • The history & statistics of breastfeeding in the African American community
  • Dispelling the myths of breastfeeding
  • The benefits of breastfeeding as it relates to mothers, infants, and society
  • The basics of breastfeeding

To provide uninterrupted website access.

To offer around the clock assistance on our toll-free helpline.

To publish and distribute a quarterly newsletter to association supporters and workshop participants.

To periodically distribute informative pamphlets and/or brochures to association supporters and workshop participants.

To provide peer counselors and/or lactation consultants for educational purposes.

Valuable Resources:

To supply the most recent information about breastfeeding on our website, including but not limited to:

  • Workshop topics
  • Helpful links
  • Chat rooms
  • Online support
  • Current research

To supply newsletters, pamphlets and/or brochures.

To make home visits as needed to workshop participants.

To issue a valuable gift card for the purchase of baby products to participants upon completion of the workshop series.

To furnish breastfeeding mothers who participate in the workshop series with the following items (during the home visit within two weeks of childbirth):

A durable electric breast pump

  • Freezer bags for breast milk
  • Nursing pads

On-Going Support:

To make Peer Counselors and/or Lactation Consultants available for:

Administering in-home support for workshop participants

  • Facilitating weekly workshop series
  • Responding to helpline and online inquiries and concerns

To continue distribution of educational literature.

To advise association supporters and workshop participants of other informative & resourceful organizations that advocate for breastfeeding.
